WHY YOGA FOR CHILDREN?

Children of all ages love yoga, they really do!

Many children today experience life as a busy, hustle, bustle, fast paced combination of school, after school activities, homework and some down time which involves TV or computer games.

Children often find themselves in highly stimulative, competitive environments and sedentary situations. All of which can impact negatively on a child’s immune system, respiratory efficiency, sleeping patterns and concentration capacity.

Children’s Yoga can provide the perfect antidote to all of the above with its unique balance of exercise, relaxation, and fun.

SO WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CHILDRENS YOGA?

::: PHYSICAL

Energy levels are balanced
Posture improves
Increased agility, co-ordination and motor control, improve and enhance their enjoyment of other sports.
The yoga postures help to counteract the negative aspects of sitting at desks for extended periods, increasing flexibility and mobility.
Breath awareness and simple breathing exercises help to increase respiratory efficiency and support positive breathing patterns.

::: MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL
Relaxation reduces anxiety, stress and concentration difficulties.
Positive visualisations provide simple and effective ways to empower and build self-confidence.
Exciting and inspiring stories feed a child’s natural curiosity, imagination and intuitive nature.

WHAT IS A CHILDRENS YOGA CLASS LIKE?

The class begins with a fun game or song related to yoga in an imaginative way, breath awareness and fun explorations around how we breath come next. Followed by yoga postures, which are linked together within the context of a fun adventure story. Each posture may be an animal or a character from the story and it’s not uncommon to practice as many as 20 yoga postures in a children’s class!

Relaxation to music or an imaginative story with positive affirmations concludes the class. The Children then draw their favourite yoga posture or something they have imagined in relaxation (many children express that relaxation is the favourite part of their yoga class) or we may sing a song in Sanskrit and talk a little about yoga and the children are encouraged to share their experiences.
